Seibugeki 18 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate supermajor held in Hachioji-shi, Tokyo, Kantō on January 12th, 2025.
Tournament summary[edit]
In the third Japanese supermajor since the start of the 2025 season, Gachipi's 5th place marked Lucario's best performance in Ultimate. As the 16th seed, he won a close game 5 set against first seed Miya (Upset factor 7) before being sent to losers' by #8 seed Fui 0-3. He then defeated #18 seed Huto 3-0 (albeit with his pocket Sonic) to enter top 8. He won his losers' eighths match against #9 seed Rarikkusu 3-1 before losing in a game 5 set to #2 seed Shuton to place 5th. Although Tsu also achieved 5th at the supermajor Umebura Japan Major 2019, his run was supplemented more heavily by secondaries Joker and Mii Swordfighter than Gachipi's own, using Sonic in 2 sets (against Huto and #48 seed Kebanga) out of the 9 he played.
This tournament also marked Shuton's first supermajor win since EVO Japan 2020 almost five years prior. As the second seed, he entered top 8 after a close game 5 set against #7 seed Raki. He then lost winners' semi-finals against #3 seed Asimo 2-3, his first loss to him since Maesuma TOP 11 almost 2 years prior. Shuton then defeated Gachipi, before meeting Miya, in a middle of a stacked losers' run after Gachipi had upset him. Shuton was able to beat Japan's best player in a dominating 3-0. Not only Miya was eliminated at 4th as the first seed, it's also the first time that Shuton beat Miya since Seibugeki 14 in June 2023, ending a 6-loss streak. Shuton then won the runback against Asimo 3-2 to enter grand finals against Snow, who himself was on one of his best runs. Despite starting in losers' side, Shuton prevailed, as he was able to beat Snow twice, 3-0 and 3-2 respectively, to win the tournament.
In contrast to some other recent Japanese majors, 5 of the 8 players seeded to place in the top 8 did so. Outside of Gachipi's run, Rarikkusu continued his good performances following a second place at Sumabato SP 54 two weeks before. Despite losing early to #41 seed Yuzu 0-3 (UF 4), he notably defeated #4 seed Akakikusu 3-2 (UF 3) in losers' top 8 qualifier before being eliminated by Gachipi at 7th. Finally, Yoshi player and #44 seed Mark made his first major top 8 appearance by upsetting #21 seed Yamanaction 2-0, #26 seed kept 3-0 and lastly #27 seed MildnaH.O 3-2, only losing to Snow and Miya 3-0 for 7th. Mark was therefore the lowest-seeded player to reach top 8.
Outside of Akakikusu, #7 seed Raki reached winners' quarters but failed to enter top 8, losing back-to-back sets to Shuton 2-3 and Miya 0-3. The most significant underperformance from a player expected to reach top 8 was that of #6 seed KEN, being eliminated at 33rd after losing to MildnaHO 1-3 (upset factor 5) and #15 seed Ryuoh 2-3 (upset factor 3). Outside of top 8 seeds, #12 seed M0tsunabE placed 33rd with losses to #117 seed Muhyou Jyo 1-2 (upset factor 7) and #33 seed Kurofune 1-3 (UF 4), #10 seed Toriguri placed 49th, losing to #74 seed F1re 1-2 (UF 6) and #23 seed Chicken 0-2, and lastly #11 seed Uame placed 65th, losing to #118 seed Uto 0-2 (upset factor 7) and #32 seed Rimu 1-2 (UF 3).
